Anymore ...

But something happened yesterday that I have to touch on.

The United States killed Osama Bin Laden. I found out from Diane Feinstein, as I was attending a memorial for my good friend Kam Kuwata.

As I left the memorial, I started scrolling my phone for tweets, and that's when things started to go horribly wrong. In any moment, serious or otherwise, it's reasonable to expect people to fish for laughs, and maybe say some insensitive things because everyone's emotions are running so high. As a person who works with social media on a daily basis, I am careful to give my tweets a second read before I press send, because once it's out there, it's out there. That said, there was one person's messages who particularly discouraged me, and since I know there were many other people with similar messages, I'm gonna single him out to make a point.

This friend of mine is someone I went to high school with. I wouldn't call him a best friend or anything, but his mother went to my mother's funeral, which is a helluva a lot more than I can say for a lot of people I consider closer friends. This friend was among the smartest in our class in high school, went on to attend an Ivy League institution, and now works on Wall Street. His tweets started out with: "Obama just needs to hit the dougie real quick #isaidit #winning." That tweet is a good example of maybe a slightly inappropriate message that is due to the emotion of the moment. Then, a few tweets later: "Michelle Obama must have domed this nigga all crazy last night #talibantop." This is where it starts getting unfortunate. I don't know what their reaction was, but I'd like to live in my own fairy tale world and think that maybe they spent the night thinking about all of the lives that were claimed by OBL, and how much this news will mean to the people. I'm even willing to assume that the First Family is selfish enough to consider the implications this might have on Barack's campaign. Perpetuating the stereotypes of overly sexual black people, though? Anyways, a few more tweets later: "I aint steppin in naria NYC yellow cab tomorrow #paybacksabitchaintit." There is a back story to this one. In high school, our beloved track coach, Greg Wells, passed away of cancer. He also taught the AFAS course for seniors. Due to his passing, my senior class was not offered that course. I'm going to assume that maybe my friend isn't as aware as he needs to be on just how recent the civil rights movement was. I'm just going to ignore the stupidity that is relating a cab driver to a member of Taliban or Al-Qaeda. There is literally nothing I can say with regards to that. Now, normally, I would let such idiocy slide, but because of the emotion of the situation, I replied. My friend never replied to me, but left the world with this message on Monday morning: "Naria cab stopped for the corporates this morning. Had to laugh cuz I'm used to this. #binladen." A black male making jokes about cabs in NYC is just so rich that all I can do is laugh.

There are so many layers to this, I can't possibly delve into them as much as I'd like. I'm convinced that social media and social networking have ruined my generation. People are being trained to have no filter for their thoughts, which we all know is never going to end well, especially when emotions get high. What gets me the most, is that my friend works on Wall Street, he is a very smart man. His name is on his twitter account, and even though his profile is private, if someone retweets it, the whole world can see it.

As I mentioned, I found out about OBL's death while at a memorial for a good friend. May 1st also happened to be my mom's 51st birthday. Maybe because loss was on my mind all day, that my mind immediately went to feeling a sense of revenge for the families of those who lost their lives on 9/11, and the families of military personnel. Maybe I'm taking this all too seriously. If there's one thing I would want people my age who read this to take away, it's that in the world of social media, you must think before you press send. If you don't want that comment attached to your name, save it for the person on the couch next to you. I know my friend is much smarter than me by any measurable, but yesterday, he sounded like a f***ing idiot, and that's never a good thing.

That's Dodger Stadium circa 1961. Before the stadium that has now hosted more people than any other venue in North America. Before the Dodgers made it a lasting memory in the hearts of tens of millions of Angelinos.

Baseball is easily my favorite sport to follow. I couldn't tell you how many hours I've spent analyzing statistics, educating myself on more advanced statistics, trying to find information on minor league players or even high school and college players who are draft eligible. A lot of people I know dismiss baseball as boring. I'm here to give you a bit of insight to what makes baseball so interesting to me, but particularly to share my love for the Dodgers.

So throughout this season, I'll be sharing much more of my Dodgers thoughts and opinions, if you don't know much about baseball and would like to learn more then let me know where I can elaborate. If you do know a lot about the Dodgers and baseball, then I'd love to engage in a dialogue.

Here's a tidbit to get you started:

The Dodgers are the first team to integrate baseball with African-Americans, the first to open a facility in Latin America, the first to sign an Asian player, and since 2001 the Dodgers have employed Kim Ng as Assistant General Manager which makes her the highest ranking woman executive in baseball.

I was talking to my friend yesterday about this new thing called formspring right, and he was saying that it's crazy to put your business out there on the internet. Mind you, this guy does not have a blog, or a twitter, and checks his facebook rarely. That got me thinking about all these social networks and how when I'm doing my "social network checkup", I probably have 5 windows open for seemingly no reason. Nobody hits me up on these things like they used to when I was a freshman, and I've even forgotten how to use Facebook in my pursuit of women (I'd much rather hit on them in bars anyway). Honestly, the mixtape has broken 350 750 downloads, which is way more rotation that I ever thought it would get. I'm healthy, I have spoken to members of the opposite sex in the last few weeks, and all my homies and brothers are doing their ish to the fullest. I am a 21 year old black man in higher education playing a college level sport (although it is a D2 club team). Tonight, I plan to get thoroughly drunk after first recording, going to my high school's alumni basketball game, and doing the aforementioned "studio session". I couldn't be in a better place right now. Yeah I could be in better shape, have more money, and be getting a blowjob right now... but I am thankful for much more than I feel I am missing out on. I even get to see the infamous PMac later, and we haven't kicked it in a minute because we're so busy.

Entourage has been, in my opinion, getting increasingly better as the episodes progress, and last night was the season finale. If you haven't seen it yet, I'm not gonna spoil anything, but I will say these few things:

It's Your Birthday

So my pops bday is this Friday. I was walking through campus thinking about what I could get him. I'm flying home Thursday night, which is probably enough of a present anyways, but I want to get him something good.

Then I got to thinking about what my Dad's birthday really means to me or what it has meant in the past. Usually it was a day to go out to dinner, buy some generic gift that he'd use, and move on. My birthday, which is less than a month after his was always much more important to me and to him (or so it seems). My mom's born day is in May, and since she passed in January I didn't pay any special importance to what turned out to be her last birthday because I didn't see death as imminent at the time. This time around, for my Dad's birthday, I feel an added importance. I have a greater appreciation for the sacrifices my parents made for me to be where I am today. It's my goal this Friday to make my Dad's birthday as important as mine is.

I wrote all of that to encourage all that read this to put a little more effort into showing your parents the appreciation you have for them.

You need to be well dressed in whatever you do, but when you need to dress it up I'm sure you don't wanna come like a bum. So take it from me; ties, sweaters, slacks, and some really good dress shoes are all things you deserve in your arsenal. If you can't shell out majorly, I would say that these are the things you should splurge on:

Belt - You can't beat a good belt. Period. Oh, make sure it matches your shoes... tackyness is the easiest way to ruin a good outfit.
Shoes - They might run you a pretty penny, but they will pay off in the long run. You don't want your dogs barkin', yo.

Sadly, my camera lens is broken(if anybody has a spare or wants to buy me one that would be dope), so I have to describe the past two days in words.

Yesterday I woke up early, drove to Canoga Park to pick up records that had just been pressed for George Thoroughgood and the Destroyers, because my uncle is his tour manager and they needed us(my aunt and I) to deliver them to Lodi, CA yesterday before their show in the evening.

Then we got on the 5 and headed up to Sacramento's general area. I called my friend and room mate Gino, who is from Sacramento, to see what he was doing. He informed me that downtown Sacramento has a music festival in a park every week and he would be attending it. I asked him to pick me up and he did.

Next, we went to the festival which was pretty fun, and followed that with dinner. we went to a place called My Barbecue Spot, and the tri tip sandwich there was delicious. We decided that we would like to go out to the bars in Downtown, so we went to Streets of London. I really liked the place, but there weren't very many girls there, much less ones I thought were very cute. We hung out there for a while and then went to the next bar. It was called The Distillery. There were probably 5 people there. Apparently it is packed there on Thursday nights, but last night was Friday so we had a beer and left. We went to another place called De Vere's(I think that's the correct spelling), and it was kind of the same thing as Streets of London, but the place was bigger so there were more people. None of the places we had been to had dancing, and that had been pretty much all I wanted to do last night.

We decided to go to the club that Gino's dad is part owner of, Ortega West. This is when the fun started. They play traditional Mexican drinking music and there is a dancefloor so I got my wish. I had never tried dancing like that and I took this as an opportunity to expand my horizons. I'm usually a person who will try anything once just for the experience, but I ended up having a whole lot of fun. I guess I was a pretty good dancer as well because Gino's sister called me "a natural". After we left, we visited the taco truck outside the club and ate again. Then I went to sleep.

This morning, we(my aunt and I) drove back to LA and I am safely in my room as I write this. Overall, I had a great time and I was happy for the hospitality that Gino's family showed me, as well as glad I could share in some new experiences and local culture.

Note: I am always hesitant to post something right after P talks about some real ish, but I figured that if i didn't put it down right now i would forget some stuff, and I would hate to leave anything out of the story.

It's Just My Thoughts Vol. 3

Volume's 1 and 2 are from back in '07. (yeah, we been doin' this sh#t for a minute)

Two things happened to me yesterday that I think have enhanced my perspective on a lot of things.

First, I went to Chipotle before work (I got a burrito bowl, if you cared) and while I was in the 'assembly line' the man in front of me held things up for a few minutes because he was dissatisfied with the amount of chicken in his tacos. He told the lady he wanted more chicken, and she told him it would cost more money. He then went on a mini-rant about how he gets less and less chicken every time. Now, if you know Chipotle like you should (in fact, if you don't eat Chipotle then just log off your computer) then you know that the size tortillas that they use for the soft tacos isn't exactly a wide canvas for the burrito designers to ladle on extra lbs of chicken. Anyways, the thing I gathered from that is that you must really be on some sh&t to complain about the amount of chicken on your Chipotle tacos. One of the things that I have been trying to teach myself is that we all have a finite amount of energy before we can go chill with Pam and Mike Jackson. That said, why waste energy on that?

Just a thought.

The second thing that happened was during my work shift. We keep packages for our residents in the back of our office, and a resident had left 17 packages back there. Not exactly sure why, but she just never came to pick them all up. My manager asked me to help carry some boxes to the girl's car in front of our office, so I did. As I set down the last two boxes the girl looked at me and said, "Well, that's all 17, ughhh, I'm gonna kill my mom."

I just walked back in and kept on with my shift. Mom references make me think, they make me miss, they sometimes bring tears to me, but they happen multiple times a day and I'm glad they do. Every single one of us is ungrateful at times, especially to the people who got us to where we are.

Next time you feel like complaining, or feel like you're going to say something ungrateful, pick something you can do to add positivity to your life. Wear a pink shirt and tell whoever you see to raise their breast cancer awareness, read about someone legendary and understand their story, or just call Mom (or Grandma & Auntie) and tell them they're beautiful and you love 'em. Stop wasting your energy for things that don't benefit you and the world we all live in. Like I said earlier, we have a finite amount of energy, but the affect that we could have on people can be infinite, that affect is mostly determined by how we use that energy

young Blake Griffin, bout to play through all the bullsh#t

Here's what Blake Griffin has going for him.
- He's the No. 1 pick in the draft. Recent memory suggests he could be the next LeBron James, Dwight Howard or Yao Ming. Or at least have that kind of impact on his franchise.

- He's going to the second largest media market in the league. Even though the Clippers are known for being terrible, they're still in LA, and they still play at Staples Center. If he can build the Clippers into a perennial playoff team, he becomes one of the more recognizable NBA players in the country.

- He's an absolute beast, but more importantly has a work ethic that is off the charts and similar levels of confidence and poise. In his sophomore year at Oklahoma, Griffin took cheap shot after cheap shot and never retaliated.

For the Clippers, Griffin gives them everything they need. It is the job of the organization to develop him (along with SG Eric Gordon) into the face of the franchise. For an organization that can never seem to get it right, the Clippers have a golden opportunity to start over. A couple of months ago they were a longshot for the first overall pick, with a roster that didn't look promising at all, and no cap space in sight. Now, they have Blake Griffin, and the challenge of helping him have the same impact as Hakeem Olajuwon, David Robinson and Tim Duncan. I for one, think it could happen. If it doesn't, I don't know what I'm gonna do.

Someone approached me this weekend and asked me why I haven't been posting a lot lately. It's not because I'm not thinking about you guys. There are things I read and see every day that I might want to share with you. Something interesting, funny, or poignant happens to me every day. On Saturday, I had a conversation with my cousin on what the police can and cannot do to you. Today, I caught about 10 minutes of The Governator's movie, 6th day (a movie no one should ever watch) and it made me pee my pants somewhat. However, my days lately have been pretty busy, and as I am in the middle of writing a final paper, I thought I would check in. Honestly, I update my Twitter pretty much every day, sometimes multiple times a day, you might want to follow me there if you're into that kind of thing.

I'm excited for summer. My internship should be pretty interesting, and I hope to learn a lot and be able to share what I've learned with you guys later. I haven't forgotten about you, and you can look forward to hearing from me sooner rather than later.

Today, I've been listening to a lot of neo-soul. It helps me study because it's mellow and the beats are good ambiance. I forget how good this music is sometimes, when I'm listening to the new jams, but it's good to reacquaint yourself, like catching up with old friends. These songs are no "chop suey", but they'll do.

I don't know if you've noticed, but I put a bunch of links in that post, I think I'm going to start doing that from now on, when at all possible. Let me know how you guys like it.

So over the past couple of weeks I've spent a lot of time trying to learn about the lives of some of the great people in our history. Every person has a great story to their life. For every color barrier broken, there is a college career with 4 varsity letters. Everyone knows the stories of the kid who didn't make varsity as a sophomore, and of course the college dropout. Even in the stories that don't qualify as rags to riches, there is often a significant amount of adversity, which is accompanied by the perseverance to get through.

If you get some time today, or tomorrow, look up some legends. See where they came from, and how they got to where they are today. It will serve to enrich and motivate you.
